These things always seem to be a problem with Christians. Are there some foods that we should not eat? How about fasting? Is it necessary? Is it pleasing to God? What about Sundays? Does the Bible say I have to go to Church on Sunday rather than Wednesday or Friday? Let’s see what the Bible says on these subjects.
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and as I gave you the green plants, I give you Everything. Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is its blood.
Genesis 9:3-4
Do you not see whatever goes into a man from the outside can not defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and so passes on? Thus He (Christ) declared all food clean.
Mark 7:18-19
Do not for the sake of food destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean. But it is wrong to make others fall by what you eat.
Romans 14:20
One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgement on him who eats.
Romans 14:2-3
One man esteems one day as better than another, while another man esteems all days alike. Let everyone be fully convinced in his own mind! He who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. He also who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; while he who abstains (a fast) abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.
Romans 14:5-6
I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean of itself; but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it is unclean.
Romans 14:14
Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow becomes a stumbling block to the weak.
I Corinthians 8:8
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the Faith by giving heed to Deceitful Spirits and Doctrines of demons… who forbid marriage and enjoin abstinence from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the Truth. For everything created by God is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.
I Timothy 4:1-5
As we have seen, it matters not what we eat or whether or not we fast or what day of the week we meet together, as long as God is glorified! Which brings me to a scripture by Paul that puts all the above in proper perspective:
If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits (demons) of the universe, why do you live as though you still belong to the world? Why do you submit to regulations: “Do not Touch, Do not Handle, Do Not Taste” (referring to all things that perish as they are used), according to human precepts and doctrines? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting rigor of devotion and self-abasement and severity to the body, but they are of no value in checking the indulgence of the flesh.
Colossians 2:20-23
